Marx/ Siegel/ Esposito: Inyo

INYO
(Japanese)
Male and female principles corresponding to the Chinese Yin and Yang.

This music was recorded in two half day long sessions a year apart.  We recorded seven pieces the first day and had to stop because I had a bad enough case of the flu, that I couldn’t continue.  Geography (Marx lives in Chicago, Siegel and I live in New York’s Hudson Valley) and busy work schedules prevented us from finishing the CD until February 2009 when we recorded three more pieces and called it a day.

The three of us have been involved in making music together since the 80’s with Arthur Rhames, Second sight with Dave Douglas, and our own individual projects.  This is our first trio recording together.  Marx and Siegel have been working together as a duo for the past several years and recorded a CD for Ayler Records, to which I contributed a few pieces.

The music on Inyo form a series of melodic sketches of various lengths.  Everything else, the harmony, rhythmic interpretations and overall shapes of the pieces, were improvised.  We did one or two takes with little discussion and short breaks for coughing fits.  Working without a bassist creates the options of being one’s own bassist or just leaving it open and allowing the transparency to come through.  We sincerely hope you enjoy listening to the music as much as we enjoyed making it.
